Friday Favorites in Five

May 30, 2014

Let me tell ya, coming back to work after vacation and a holiday is just rough. That's all there is too it. I've been so tired this week. Getting up early and actually having to think about something other than when I last applied sunscreen is difficult. :)

1. This Onyx Bezel Wrapped Bracelet is beautiful! I love pretty much everything on the Saressa Designs website.

2. How amazing is this photograph? If you squint, can you see a horse? Like this. I can...

3. These feather pink sandals are just too cute. I wish there were other colors though. Turquoise would be pretty sweet!

4. My new inspiration for a painting. It's an abstract beach scene...still can't get off the beach.

5. I'm ready. I'm pretty sure I could be packed again in no time.

How was your week? Any plans for the weekend? I think I'll be playing catch up all weekend!

May 28, 2014

Whenever I come home from the beach my skin feels...weathered. Spending multiple days in the sun can definitely take a toll. I do love having a little tan though, so I've found a few things to help my skin stay rejuvenated.

First I start with smoothing my feet (we all need a little TLC on the heels). I like to use a pumice stone in the shower because it gets rid of dead skin and helps smooth calluses. You'd think the sand would do this naturally, but I've never had good luck with that.

After cleansing the skin, I use a good exfoliating body scrub. My favorite right now is the Tree Hut Shea Sugar Body Scrub. It immediately makes me feel as though I'm getting rid of damaged skin. From too much sun perhaps?

Next I exfoliate my lips. No matter how much lip balm or sunscreen I use they always feel dry. I use a homemade recipe, and it works like a charm.

When I spend any consistent time in the sun I see noticeable changes in my face regardless of how much sunscreen I use. For this reason I use an at home facial peel. I've just recently started using this Ole Henriksen Lemon Strip Flash Peel, but so far so good. My face always feels so refreshed, and it helps speed up cell resurfacing.

Finally, I use coconut oil to lock in moisture from head to toe.

It's amazing how much better I feel after this little bit of pampering. My skin is just a little more radiant and definitely rejuvenated.

Memorial Day Entertaining

May 26, 2014

Time is going by way too fast. I can't believe it's already Memorial Day!! This has become one of my favorite holidays - it's like the kick off to summer with grilled burgers, hot dogs, BBQ, blueberry pie, and behind it all is great meaning.

If you're planning a backyard Memorial Day party, here are some entertaining ideas!

Patriotic Tin Cans to store food, straws, utensils, anything!

Decorate your porch railing, or the edge of a table! This is such a cute (and easy) idea.

I could go for one of these right about now! Great way to cool off in the summer heat.

I love striped straws! The vintage glasses are the perfect touch.

What are your plans for Memorial Day? Do you have any go-to entertaining ideas or recipes?

Friday Favorites in Five

May 23, 2014

Wrapping up the "beach week" on the blog, I'm going to share the top five favorite things to do at the beach. It pretty much revolves around relaxing and eating...

One of my favorite things is riding bikes on the beach. It's an easy way to stay active. (source)

I love eating seafood at the beach. Add a little hushpuppy to the side, some butter. Yes please. (source)

For some reason I read a lot more when I'm at the beach than I do anywhere else. I think it's because I can totally relax and my mind doesn't wander! (source)

I have to walk the beach during the sunset. It's like this unwritten rule. It never gets old. (source)

Of course, one of my favorite things about the beach is the tan. This image cracks me up. (source)

Happy Friday! Next week it's back to the real world...

Beach Style

May 21, 2014

One of my favorite things about going somewhere new is planning the outfits. I love beach style because it's so comfortable. My favorite thing to wear lately has been a maxi dress. It's so easy to dress up or down, and it doesn't take a ton of effort. Orange and blue are the perfect pair (because they're complimentary colors), and the clutch pulls it all together. This outfit would be just right for dinner by the ocean. To dress it 'down' pair it with some flat sandals and simple jewelry.

Summer Style

Beach Essentials

May 19, 2014

It's summertime...which means it's also time for our annual beach trip to the Carolina's. I get pretty excited for the beach. I can breathe better, I get a tan, the flowers smell better there (it's true), the food is better, you don't get funny looks for wearing no shoes (remember this story?), the views are endless, even though it's hot there's always an amazing breeze...this list could keep going, but I'll stop. You get the idea. I like the beach. In true planner style, I usually make myself a packing list before I go on a trip. Here are some of the items on this year's list...

1. I love a sun hat. Perfect for extra afternoon coverage!
2. Having a beach bag that resists sand and water is a must.
3. I pretty much can't go outside for extended periods of time without sunglasses.
4. Gotta have a cute cover-up!
5. This monogrammed tumbler is perfect to hold the drink of choice...I need to stay hydrated.
6. For the beach I love these flip flops. I don't have to worry about them getting wet.
7. I like to stash some facial wipes in my beach bag. I usually wipe away the sweat mid-day.
8. My lips get so chapped in the sun/wind - a lip balm is key. I'd like to try this one!
9. Sweat and oil can cause some major skin issues. This sunscreen is light and won't clog pores.
10. I can't get enough of the classic Hawaiian Tropic. Love the scent.
11. For an extra tanning boost I love the Maui Babe browning lotion.
12. My Hayden Reis bag is awesome. It keeps my smaller items dry.
13. Last, but not least, is a big (and cute) beach towel!

Happy beachin'!

All I could think about this week was the beach. More on that to come...but in the meantime, let this inspire you and give happy thoughts. Oh, and happy Friday!

Yep. It is. (source)

Wouldn't you like to just stay there all day? (source)

I could probably stare at this view for a while. (source)

Looks so refreshing, doesn't it? (source

It does!!! (source)

Have a good weekend, and check back Monday for more beach-inspired things. :)

Drug Store Finds for a "Full Face" Day

May 14, 2014

There are times that I don't spend much on my beauty products. The reason? It's just not worth it. Price tag doesn't always equal quality in my opinion.

Today I'm going to walk through some of the drug store finds that have been just as good, if not better, than the higher priced alternatives to achieve a "full face" of makeup. To me a "full face" means that you don't take short cuts - you use primer, foundation, concealer, blush, eye shadow, eye liner, mascara, brows, the whole shebang. I don't go through all of these steps every day, just when I need better coverage or if I'm going for a certain look.
Primer - I've been using the Revlon Photoready Perfecting Primer lately. I really like the consistency, and it does seem to hold makeup in place pretty well.

Foundation - This Neutrogena Healthy Skin Liquid Makeup has been my go-to for the past few months. It surprised me the first time I used it. It goes on well, and has good coverage.

Under Eye Concealer - I've talked about this concealer before, so this isn't anything new. I still love this Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser for my under eye area.

Concealer - The Maybelline Fit Me Concealer is perfect for the face. I think it covers just as well as higher end products, and WAY more affordable.

Blush - I keep reaching for this NYX Cosmetics Cream Blush. I feel like I have more control with the cream product, and it's easy to build. I use the color "Tea Rose" and find that it is the perfect pink for me.

Eyelid Primer - I have not tried this E.L.F. Eyelid Primer; however, I've heard some good things about it and it has good reviews. I will give it a go and see how it compares to my current favorite!

Eye Shadow - I've used pretty much all of the drug store brands in the eye shadow department. I always go back to the Revlon ColorStay line. In my opinion, it has the 'creamiest' consistency of the drug store brands, and I find that the pigmentation is a little better than others.

Eye Liner - For a basic pencil, my favorite is the L'Oreal Colour Riche. I recently posted about eye liner types (read more here), and this is currently my most used liner. This is one of those products that I really don't see the point in spending a lot - it's a pencil. How different can they be?

Mascara - I have literally tried just about every drug store brand of mascara, and the Maybelline Voluminous Butterfly Mascara has become my new drug store favorite. I love the brush - it makes it so easy to get every lash.

Brow Gel - To set brows, I have used the Maybelline Great Lash Clear Mascara for several years. I will say, recently I started using a higher end product and it actually is better (dang it) than the clear mascara. Regardless, this is still a great alternative and I would definitely repurchase if I wanted a less expensive option.

Any of these products are pretty easy to find at Ulta, Target, or any drug store. Because of that, I think it makes them even more appealing! I've been out of town a couple times and have been able to find just what I needed without much effort. Love that!

Design Files

May 12, 2014

Because I am a designer, I love looking at great interiors. I get so many ideas (too many) from Pinterest, Houzz, and various magazines. The thing that is most interesting to me is how each person has their own unique look. No two spaces are the same. Here's a peek into my personal design style inspirations.

These sofas are one of my favorite styles. The low rolled arm makes it a little more "dressed up", but the large cushions keep it comfortable. This room is very calming. The use of a common grey keeps it monochrome, but they added a few little hints of blue that compliment very well. Not to mention those gorgeous doors!

This is a great way to visually divide a space using furniture. I also love the beams with the light and dark contrast. The ceilings are already pretty high, but by keeping the walls light they blend into the ceiling so it feels even more seamless. By using a few darker pieces of furniture it grounds the room.

I'm not usually an all white person, or an antler person, but this room is pretty cool. The main reason I picked this space is because of that incredibly amazing chunk of tree sitting in the middle of the room, aka the coffee table. I've liked pieces like this since I was in design school (pretty sure I used something very similar in a project) and have wanted one ever since. None of the trees around our home are "cool" enough - meaning they don't have that gnarly shape. Notice that the walls and ceiling are covered in the same wood plank? They chose to apply a white-wash to the wall portion, which gives it a light and airy look. I like this because it can go beachy or cabiny (technical design terms).

I love a good open concept space. This Beach Style Living Room by Charleston Interior Designers & Decorators Margaret Donaldson Interiors is the perfect beach home. These floors are amazing! Classic design, classic lines, and classic colors that will never go out of style. There's also a fun play with pattern used in the pillows and side chairs. It's a little more formal than my taste usually goes, but I could live here, no doubt. :)

Friday Favorites in Five

May 9, 2014

First of all, this has been a fantastic week weather-wise. We've had summertime temps and sunny skies. Beautiful! It has also been a week of challenges which presented a few unexpected decisions. It is at times like these that I truly learn more about myself and the power of trusting the Lord. It also never ceases to amaze how people sometimes react to situations. Don't freak out, nothing tragic happened...and it will be okay one way or the other no matter what I decide. It just took me a little by surprise and I have done, and will continue to do, a lot of thinking.

With that said, my favorites all revolve around some empowering and inspiring quotes and scripture. All of which I need to keep in mind moving into next week. :)

At the end of the day, regardless of the situation or challenge that any of us face, it comes down to faith and trust that it will all work out for the best. Easier said than done sometimes!

Have a happy Mother's Day this weekend!

Ideas for Mom

May 7, 2014

With Mother's Day quickly approaching, I thought it would be fun to put together some last minute ideas for your mom (or mother figure) to celebrate this special day.

1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6

1. If she needs a day of at-home pampering, the Fresh Rose Face Mask is the perfect gift. It is infused with rosewater and real rose petals (so it's also like giving her flowers!) which helps hydrate and restore the skin.

2. Does she like to read? A good book is always a great gift - perfect for a little quiet time.

3. Tote bags (especially when they're personalized) are fun by themselves, but for something extra try filling it with smaller gifts that your mom will love.

4. Something shiny is a classic go-to gift. This necklace is perfect for your mom if she loves mixed metals.

5. If she's more into gardening or flowers, try coming up with a creative way to give a potted plant. If it's a perennial that comes back every year, that's even better!

6. Giving creative gifts that tell her how you feel will never disappoint. Try a print that spells it out.

Cinco de Mayo Guacamole

May 5, 2014

Happy Cinco de Mayo! I like this day because it's the perfect excuse to eat Mexican food...and one of my favorites is guacamole. :) As soon as the local stores put avocado on their shelves I started testing ways to make my own guacamole, and this recipe is a simple and delicious combination of ingredients. Make this tonight with some tacos, and you'll be set (that's my plan anyway)!

Guacamole Recipe

2 Hass Avocados
1/3 cup diced tomato
1/3 cup diced onion
1 Tbsp garlic, minced
Juice of 1 lime
1/2 tsp salt and pepper
1 Tbsp mayonnaise (optional - just makes it a little creamier)

Combine all ingredients in a small bowl. Mix until combined. Serve!

Friday Favorites in Five

May 2, 2014

This week has been a little out of the ordinary. First of all, welcome to May! Wow, I can't believe it's already May. It'll be the middle of summer in no time!

Thankfully, it was a short week (kind of) at work due to an out of town conference these last couple days. Woo hoo! It was nice to spend some time with my husband away from the every-day (we both attended the same conference - perk of working at the same place I guess). We've been pretty busy lately with projects, but that's a good thing!

Let's get to the favorites this week from Pinterest!

This little room is awesome! I love the bold colors, and wish I was more daring with my color choices in my own home. After I looked at this picture more I realized that it's a kid's room, but the colors could still be used in an adult space.

I've been so into smoothies lately. It's the perfect substitute for ice cream...which I always want.

I love this quote. Such a perfect reminder. Check out the Lindsay Letters blog - it's really fun!

What a view!!! I'd love to see this, but probably not standing quiiiiiiite so close to the edge.

I saved the best for last. No joke. An Ice Cream Cleanse. What?!? Yes, that's what I said too. I'm thinking this is something I should try...and if it doesn't work, at least I can enjoy some ice cream and pretend there was a purpose behind it.

Did you have any favorite finds this week? If so, share them in the comments! Hope you have a great weekend.
